Google Glass Preview - First in Malaysia
You saw it here first. It may be the first and only Google Glass in Malaysia.
A friend of mine was lucky enough to get a hold of one from the US and yours truly got to play with it for a good three minutes.
First of all, if you wear normal prescription glasses, you need to throw that away and wear contacts. Else, it is near impossible to use the Google Glass. And the Google Glass doesn't have glasses in front of it like a normal pair of glasses. It has a little prism on the right side of the frame instead.
The little prism in front of the frame is a small display, much like your electronic viewfinders found in higher end mirrorless cameras. The resolution isn't very high in my opinion and probably would get better as they build more of these.
When you wear it, you speak to it, saying "OK glass" and it is ready for your command. It seemed to understand my Malaysian-English accent.
You can touch/swipe the sides of the glass to execute some other commands such as go to the home screen.
The most popular app my friends and I tested is the camera app. Just say "OK glass, take a picture" and it will snap a photo. You can then review the photo by doing more gestures on the side of the glass. Great of stealth shooting.
It also accepted the command "OK glass, target and launch homing missiles" and from the side of the glass came a salvo of little but menacing looking miniature missiles. OK, that didn't happen, but it certainly felt like it would.
That's it, I didn't test any other apps but from my short test I can say the Google Glass is a really interesting toy, but at the moment, it feels like a prototype rather than a commercially viable product. James Bond technology really. Perhaps one day, all glasses manufacturer would have an option to embed the Google Glass hardware into their spectacles. But for now, I shall still be happy shooting photos with my Fujifilm X20!
Update: Found this video on what life would be like using the Google Glass for serious photography! Pretty funny!
